Dragon's Breath (Heterophylla) Alocasia

Dragon's Breath Alocasia Care Guide

1. Light:

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Place your Dragon's Breath Alocasia in a spot with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves.
  • Artificial Light: If natural light is limited, you can use fluorescent or LED grow lights.

2. Water:

  • Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. We recommend using a Moisture Meter like this to ensure you are neither overwatering or underwatering.
  • Thorough Watering: Water thoroughly until it drains out of the pot's bottom, but ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.

3. Humidity:

  • High Humidity: Dragon's Breath Alocasia loves high humidity. Aim for 60-80% humidity.
  • Increase Humidity: Use a humidifier, mist the leaves regularly, or place a water tray near the plant to maintain high humidity.

4. Temperature:

  • Warm Temperatures: Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

5. Soil:

  • Well-Draining Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of potting soil or coconut coir, chunky perlite, and orchid bark, works well. We also really like semi hydroponics and use a rock mixture called Pon or clay balls known as Leca. We use and recommend these brands: Click Here For Pon or Click Here For Leca
  • Aeration: Ensure the soil is loose and well-aerated to promote healthy root growth.

6. Fertilizer:

  • Regular Feeding: Fertilize your plant every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. We use Foliage Pro by Dyna-Grow on our plants. As well as Silica by TPS for added cellular wall strength.  ** Please note, the links are affiliate links and we may receive a small commission with no added cost to you.
  • Reduce Feeding in Winter: Cut back on fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

7. Pruning:

  • Remove Dead Leaves: Prune off any yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant healthy and encourage new growth.
  • Shape the Plant: Trim back any leggy growth to maintain a compact, attractive shape.

8. Repotting:

  • Repot When Necessary: Repot your Alocasia every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one. Try to avoid touching their roots as they do not like them being disturbed and might drop leaves because of it.
  • Fresh Soil: Use fresh, well-draining potting mix or pon/leca when repotting to provide new nutrients.

9. Pests:

  • Check for Pests: Regularly inspect your plant for common pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.
  • Treat Promptly: If pests are detected, treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

10. Dormancy:

  • Winter Dormancy: Dragon's Breath Alocasia may go dormant in the winter. If the leaves die back, reduce watering and stop fertilizing until new growth appears in the spring.

Tips for Success:

  • Rotate the Plant: Rotate your Alocasia occasionally to ensure even growth on all sides.
  • Clean the Leaves: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
  • Patience: Alocasia plants can be sensitive to changes in their environment, so be patient and give them time to adjust.

By following these care tips, your Dragon's Breath Alocasia should thrive and become a beautiful focal point in your indoor plant collection!
